Japanese hair straightening or thermal reconditioning is a method of permanently straightening and defrizzing hair types that include: overly curly, wavy, frizzy, kinky, colored, highlighted and bleached hair. The process simultaneously straightens and repairs hair by realigning the cystine bonds, and improves the hair structure by sealing in the highest quality proteins/emollients through the heat and compression of a flat ironing process.

The leading producers of Japanese hair straightening or thermal reconditioning systems include Liscio and Yuko systems. I have been educated in both systems, and as of January, 2010, I have successfully completed over 1530 hair straightening procedures in the greater Portland, Oregon, area. The quality and results of both systems never cease to amaze me. Japanese hair straightening or thermal reconditioning literally transforms the lives of clients.

The Liscio system, which I use the most, was introduced, manufactured and received approval by the Japanese government in 1996, for its unique thermal reconditioning formula. In 1998, it was patented in the United States and since then, has developed the reputation of being the leading Japanese hair straightening or thermal reconditioning system. In contrast, Yuko system was developed in Japan and patented in the United States in 1997. I find the Yuko system more effective on coarse, defiant hair.

Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT) was originally developed in Brazil and is an incredibly popular, temporary, hair straightening and conditioning treatment. Unlike the Japanese treatments which permanently straighten hair, BKT hair will slowly revert to its “natural texture” within a three to four month period. Unlike Thermal Reconditioning, the bonds of the hair have not been permanently altered. Instead, the hair shaft is coated with Keratin.

Brazilian Keratin Treatment is universal, suitable for all types of chemically treated hair including; bleached, highlighted, colored, permed, relaxed and previously straightened hair. BKT is excellent for calming – not permanently straightening – curly, frizzy, damaged, dull, lifeless or mistreated hair.

BKT is considered a replenishing/smoothing treatment that reconditions, coats, softens and silkens hair.
